April: Earth Day, Olivia, Aging in Place and more…

As I compose this page, I am thinking about the old rhyme, “April showers bring May Flowers.” While April is typically one of our dryer months, we do have our share of showers – pollen showers that is. Right now we are experiencing an obscene snowstorm of yellow dust outside, the sunshine highlighting the little grains of pollen as the wind blows them all over homes and trees.

And into our nostrils (sneezing).

Okay. Let me grab a tissue and just deal with it. After all, pollen is what makes new trees and plants and flowers possible. And it’s sure better than snow.

Speaking of Mother Nature, Earth Day is April 22 and in this issue of Lifestyles After 50 magazine, we pay tribute to our collective mom with some poems and a short story by our readers, news about an Earth Day rally in Washington, D.C. and things you can do to reduce your carbon footprint, protect the environment, and save money too.

One of the most gorgeous places on the planet is the U.S. Virgin Islands. This is the time of year when nice temperatures prevail and there is very little rainfall – plus it’s Carnival season(!) Plan your getaway with our guide to the three main islands, St. John, St. Thomas and St. Croix. And learn how to receive $300 in spending credits for tours and activities.

April also brings an Olivia Newton-John tour to the Capitol Theatre in Clearwater and to the Seminole Casino Hotel Immokalee. In this issue, Olivia gives us the lowdown on her tour, successful aging, healthy lifestyle habits and the causes she’s hopelessly devoted to.

We’ve included some delicious recipes and everything you ever wanted to know about that spring icon: the egg.

With more and more people making healthy lifestyle choices, and breakthroughs in medicine, people are living longer these days. Most of them want to live independently for as long as possible, so we’ve put together plenty of stories on the topic of “aging in place.” You’ll find tips to keep your body and brain fit and information on how new technologies, delivery services, and home modifications are making the concept of aging in place easier. We’ve included some info on the new reverse mortgages and introduce you to the first Margaritaville community – yes, it’s Jimmy Buffett’s own damn fault.

Next month we’ll be exploring the question of when to retire. Send us your thoughts; we may publish them. Terri@LifeStylesAfter50.com
