Each year, July lazily rolls into August and brings about a blazing end to the summer season. No matter how you might try, this month is, without fail, the warmest out of the year. With air almost too heavy to breathe and an unrelenting sun hanging high overhead, it’s easy to shut yourself inside and hide from the heat.
What makes August special?
August is also National Wellness Month, a great excuse (not that you need one!) to take special care in being kind to yourself and your body. The term “wellness” is multifaceted in that it can refer to your physical health, your diet or even how you’re feeling mentally. With the pandemic that’s stretched on for a number of months, many folks are struggling with all aspects of their well-being.
Take this month to pick up the habit of doing some light exercise each day, such as a few laps in the pool, or even making the change to diversify your diet. Be sure to take action if you feel as though you could use either professional help or a just a simple change of habit when it comes to taking care of you.
Staying well means eating well, too. Without a balanced diet complete with fresh fruits, vegetables and lean meats, you may notice yourself not feeling well. And since Florida’s August heat tends to be vicious, it’s a great idea to focus on cool (temperature “cool”, not “rad”, but that too, I suppose) recipes in order to keep yourself hydrated and comfortable.
An easy way you can help keep yourself hydrated, cool and healthy is by preparing a large batch of fruit salad to eat from throughout the duration of your week. You can also do the same by making a homemade veggie tray to have as snacks or as a side with meals. Fruits and vegetables tend to have a high percentage by volume of water, making them a great way to stay hydrated if you’re tired of relying on water to hydrate you all day.
By preparing fruit and vegetables to be at the ready, no matter how busy your day or week gets, you’re able to get at least a few fruits and veggies in every day, if not your daily two cups of each.
