Mike Welter, a pickleball player and the 2017 Florida Senior Games Male Athlete of the Year, continued his recovery from a stroke in September by competing in the 2019 National Senior Games held June 15-24 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

He won two matches in the Mixed Doubles 60-64 age group this time around.

Between 2015 and 2017, Welter won six gold medals and three silver medals in regional senior games as well as a silver medal at the 2017 National Senior Games.

I’m coming back and it’s a work in progress that I’ll be dealing with for the rest of my life,” Welter said. “But by golly, I’m here and I’m having fun.”

Nearly 700 Floridians made the trip out west for competition in 20 sports, winning a total of 450 medals – the third highest total of all 50 U.S. states. Nearly 14,000 athletes, age 50 and over, competed at the 2019 National Senior Games.
