Each February is coated in heart-shaped everything. From sweaters to chocolates and everything in between, this month is defined by those colorful little doodles. However, this month isn’t just about the cartoon version of what beats in our chests—it's also American Heart Month. With that comes increased awareness of what you can do to keep your ticker in tip-top shape.
Here we are again at the edge, looking out at the potential 2022 presents. Have you decided what you’d like to accomplish this year? With each January comes a renewed focus on personal health, whether it be physical or emotional health or just general well-being. The onset of a new year is a great time to begin new daily practices that can help nourish you from the inside out.
And just like that, 2021 is nearly over. Some of us may be rejoicing, and others may just be in awe that another year has flown by. However, December is one of my favorite months regardless of its year-ending significance.
Last year, I wrote about how November has always been my favorite month—the anticipation of the holidays, the cooler atmosphere and the perfect weather for having cozy afternoons indoors. My opinion still has not changed, I just wanted to reminisce and recap.
Life is full of changes and adaptation, something we are reminded of with the turning of the seasons. Although Florida doesn’t show the dramatic flaming end of summer seen in northern areas of the country, we can still feel the slight chill to the air that means the busiest time of the year is coming.
Once September makes an appearance, it has a way of making us feel as though fall has arrived. The temperatures may still be balmy, but the promise of the coziest time of year can’t be beaten. And although most of us aren’t quite ready for pumpkin spice-drenched treats, the end of summer is joyous enough to celebrate.
This month holds two exciting recognized holidays: Senior Citizen’s Day and National Honey Bee Awareness Day. And although you wouldn’t think these two have anything in common, you may be surprised by the amount of good that locally sourced honey can have on a senior body.
As with almost every Letter from the Editor that I write, there are celebrations to be had this month. We are currently in the midst of summer and nearly the mid to late end of the season. With that comes balmy temperatures and different occasions and holidays. Of course, there is the Fourth of July, which is always a fun time and a great excuse to stay up late in celebration. However, July also includes Parents’ Day on the 23rd, a little-known and celebrated holiday.
As more people get the COVID-19 vaccine, there’s hope for an end to the pandemic that has put a halt on travel plans around the world for the last year-plus. However, many seniors must cancel their yearly summer travel plans once again to keep themselves safe as the pandemic continues. If you’re itching to get out there and explore this summer but find yourself stuck at home, visit some of the amazing places in our virtual summer travel guide for 2021 to quench your thirst for life.
The month of May is always exciting as it marks what feels like the start of summer (even though the season does not officially start until June 21) and several holidays sprinkled throughout the month. From goofy celebratory puns to a somber holiday in which we honor fallen military servicemen and women, here’s your guide to celebrating this month.
