The month of October is recognized as Healthy Lung Month by the American Lung Association. It is designed to help educate the public about the importance of protecting their lungs against general neglect, bronchitis, mold, air pollution and smoking, for example. Now is the time to learn more about what you can do to keep your lungs in great shape no matter what they might face.
Stop Smoking
Although this isn’t revolutionary news, it’s still worth mentioning. Smoking causes lung issues due to the inevitable build up of scar tissue in the lungs as they try to protect themselves from the chemicals in cigarettes.

Avoid Polluted Air
From secondhand smoke to smog, polluted air is harmful to your lungs, especially if you are regularly exposed to it. Unclean air not only harms the delicate tissue of your lungs, but also forces them to work harder in order to use what little oxygen is found in polluted air.

Steer Clear of Infections
Various sorts of viral illnesses are very hard on the lungs and can lead to more serious long-term infections. The best way to keep yourself from contracting viruses is by simply washing your hands regularly and avoid touching your face/orifices. Sanitize high points of contact in your home in order to keep germs at bay in your house.
Vaccines are always a good idea come flu season, especially for those over 50 years old. Double check with your doctor before taking any vaccine.
If you do happen to get sick, help yourself by visiting a health professional at the first on-set signs of illness. With COVID-19 still at large, you can never be too safe when it comes to flu season.
Routine House Cleanings
In the spirit of keeping surfaces sanitized at home, be sure to also keep dust, dirt and pet dander under control. Regularly dusting unused surfaces with a damp cloth is a great way to be sure you don’t stir dust and dander into the air as you’re cleaning.
Another way to cut down on house dust, pet hair and other pollutants is to invest in an air purifier. These devices suck in the ambient air of your home and filter out any pollutants. Purifiers are a great way to constantly clear your air without having to even think about it.
Regular Aerobics
Regular exercise also helps to keep your lungs in shape. Keep your lungs conditioned by making simple daily switches such as taking the stairs, walking around for each commercial break during your favorite show, or even just standing for a few minutes longer than you would typically can do your body a lot of good. Anything that gets your blood flowing and your lungs working is a great way to keep yourself in check.
