Barry Shollenberger (left) and Jay Bortner, both from Valrico, teamed up to win the bronze medal in the Men’s Doubles Tennis 75-79 age group at the 2019 National Senior Games, held June 15-24 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Shollenberger also won a bronze medal in the Men’s Singles 75-79 age group, while
Bortner had a fifth-place finish. The team has won medals in each of the last four
National Senior Games dating back to 2011.

The distance between Florida and New Mexico did not deter Florida athletes as
687 made the trip out west for competition in 20 sports, amassing a total of 450
medals—the third highest of all 50 U.S. states. Nearly 14,000 athletes, age 50 and
over, competed at the 2019 National Senior Games.
