Puppies, Kittens & Moms for May

As I write May 2026 column dedicated to moms and pets, I have plenty of help from my tuxedo cat Henri, who slept on the pillow next to me last night and demanded breakfast as soon as he heard the first bird chirp at 5 AM.

Early on, my mom (Happy Mother’s Day, by the way) taught me this love of animals. In our house, we had cats, birds, several aquariums full of fish, a turtle, and several snakes in a heated terrarium. (On an interesting side note, we never had the “usual” pets: no hamsters or gerbils, and no dogs. Pets and moms are therefore inextricably linked in my mind – I love them all and can’t imagine a life without them!

In fact, having a cat has made my life better in every possible way. He is a “snuggle-muffin” who likes to lay curled up next to me while I work, sleep, or just watch TV. He’s a great companion who demands much but gives much in return. His fur is soft, and he’s vocal in his appreciation of being petted. Ok, so sometimes he bites when I’m not quick enough with the cat treats, but then what can you expect from a superior being?

As May is National Pet Month, I’ve discovered some ways you can celebrate:

  • Consider adopting from local shelters or fostering animals in need.
  • Donate to and/or volunteer with organizations that promote animal welfare and responsible pet ownership.
  • Grab Fido and attend pet-related events such as charity walks and pet shows.
  • Use social media or community platforms to educate others about responsible pet care and the benefits of adopting pets.

Wishing you smiling dogs, purring cats, and a Happy Mother’s Day!
